“Having a safe place to live changed everything. For the first time in a long time, I could focus on my health, reconnect with my family, and start looking forward instead of just getting through each day.”
David*, Bridge to Home Program Participant
After spending more than a year experiencing homelessness and living in an emergency shelter, David was struggling to imagine a different future.
During that time, he had experienced a number of difficult incidents that left him feeling unsafe and taking a significant toll on both his physical and mental health.
When David connected with Accessible Housing’s Bridge to Home program funded by CHF, one of the first priorities was finding stable housing. He was quickly matched with a permanent, accessible apartment in a well-connected area of the city.
For David, the location was especially important. Living with a progressive lung condition makes long-distance walking difficult, and being close to public transit, healthcare services, and other daily supports helped make life more manageable.
“Having a safe place of my own made an immediate difference,” he said. “I wasn’t worrying about where I was going to sleep anymore. I could focus on my health and getting back into a routine.”
Bridge to Home, funded by Calgary Homeless Foundation, supports individuals experiencing homelessness by helping them access housing and the resources needed to maintain it long-term. Through the program, David was approved for a rental assistance subsidy, ensuring his housing remained affordable and sustainable.
“Knowing I could afford to stay housed gave me peace of mind,” David explained. “It gave me confidence that I could move forward.”
With stable housing and ongoing support in place, David successfully graduated from the program.
One of the most meaningful changes has been the restoration of family relationships. After a long period of estrangement, David has reconnected with both his son and daughter.
“Being housed gave me the chance to rebuild those relationships,” he said. “Having my family back in my life has meant a lot.”
David’s story demonstrates the life-changing impact of safe, stable housing. What began with access to a home became an opportunity to improve his health, rebuild important connections, and regain hope for the future.
For David, housing was more than a place to live—it was the foundation for a fresh start.
