A Place that Saved My Life

“Journey Church day space has been hugely positive in my life. I don’t know if I would still be here if it wasn’t for them…I have no words almost. It’s an amazing place and it changed my life.”

Tony*, Journey Church Day Space Client

When Tony arrived at the Journey Church Day Space in the summer of 2023, he was new to life on the street and looking for somewhere safe to rest during the day.

“I heard about a place in Tuscany where I could get a warm meal, take a nap, and that they had lots of services,” he shared. “When I got there, they weren’t judgy. It was clean, welcoming, and different than a shelter. It was just people; everybody was really, really nice to me.”

Run in partnership with Distress Centre Calgary, Journey Church is one of two dedicated Day Spaces operating as part of The Day Space Network, which is coordinated by Calgary Homeless Foundation (CHF) in partnership with The City of Calgary.  The Day Space Network is a coordinated group of organizations and spaces that provide safe, accessible daytime supports for people experiencing homelessness all year round.  As part of its coordinating role, CHF works closely with service providers to ensure Day Spaces are well-resourced, consistent, and integrated into Calgary’s broader homeless-serving system of care.

The support provided at Day Spaces is holistic, including access to health and recovery services, employment support, essential items and connection to housing resources, to name a few. As Tony noted, “I had gotten really sick last winter, and they sent me to hospital. I was in Foothills Hospital about a month. They helped me get a worker at the Alex and helped me get housing. My health is looking better now that I have ongoing support. I am on Methadone and have been off Fentanyl for almost 6 months!

There are so many things they have helped me with there. Clothing was a huge one and having food every day was amazing. Just having someone to talk to helped so much.

I would recommend Journey Church Day Space to anyone who is on the street, fighting addiction, and looking for hope.

I have no words almost. It’s an amazing place and it changed my life.”
