Annual memorial service

Longest Night of the Year

Calgary’s annual memorial service honours those who have lost their lives while experiencing homelessness. Join us as we come together to remember their lives.

Honour those who have lost their lives experiencing homelessness

Each year, we gather to remember the lives of those who died while experiencing homelessness in Calgary. We read their names aloud, share their stories, and ensure their humanity is recognized.

This memorial provides our community with a space to grieve, reflect, and commit to creating a future where homelessness is rare, brief, and non-recurring.

This memorial is about sharing our humanity, about grieving, compassion, and honouring the lives of those who mattered deeply to us.

The list of names that are read speaks to the urgency to address the needs of those experiencing homelessness. One name is one too many. We continue to strive to know a future in our community where homelessness doesn't exist.

A permanent place for remembrance

The memorial is a permanent place for Calgarians to remember loved ones who’ve lost their lives while experiencing homelessness.

Located at 107 13 Ave SE. Installed in October of 2021, it was designed and constructed by artists who have lived or living experiences of homelessness or poverty. It is the culmination of a three-year collaboration between the Client Action Committee, Calgary Homeless Foundation, University of Calgary, and the City of Calgary, with the support of Canadian Artists Against Poverty, and homeless-serving agencies in the city.

The memorial features a bench without barriers to lay down on, two pillars embedded with phone chargers and painted with murals, and a bronze backpack statue.

In this space, we remember and honour our neighbours, family, and friends – known and unknown – who have lived and died because of the traumas of homelessness. In past, present, and future – may they rest in power.
