Scholarships and Education Opportunities
The Calgary Homeless Foundation (CHF) is offering 30 scholarships at $1,200 each towards a Certificate in Working with Homeless Populations: Basic Skills and Practices. This Certificate program is jointly developed by the CHF, the Alex's Pathways to Housing and the Faculty of Social Work, University of Calgary.

Background
One of the strategies in the CHF's 10 Year Plan to End Homelessness is to reinforce non-profit organizations serving Calgarians experiencing or at risk of homelessness. As such, the CHF, Alex's Pathways to Housing, and the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Calgary have developed a certificate program to help front-line employees and volunteers from non-profit organizations and the faith community to work towards helping people end their homelessness.
Scholarship application
Eligibility requirements:
- Involved in direct service delivery to those experiencing or at-risk of homelessness (as an employee or a volunteer)
- Completed application received by the CHF by end of day, Thursday, March 18, 2010 including:
- A brief description (approximately 250 words) from the applicant describing why they are interested in taking the course, what their goals are upon completing the course, and how taking the course will allow them to help people end their homelessness.
- A letter of support from an executive or person in a senior management position from the applicant's place of work or volunteer assignment nominating the applicant for the scholarship opportunity.
- A completed application form (see "Files You Can Download" list below)
NOTE: Confirmation of acceptance into the course (official correspondence from the University of Calgary indicating that the candidate is accepted) is required before CHF will advance scholarship funds.
Process:
- The CHF will be accepting scholarship applications from December 1, 2009 through March 18, 2010.
- 50% of the scholarship money will be advanced upon confirmation of acceptance into the course
- 50% will be advanced upon confirmation of course completion.
- Due to the limited number of scholarships available (30), CHF will award on a first-come, first-served basis (provided applicants meet eligibility requirements), so it is recommended that interested applicants apply early.
- Depending on the number of applicants, CHF reserves the right to limit the number scholarships issued to the staff or volunteers of any individual organization or agency to a maximum of three.
- To receive the scholarship money, applicants must demonstrate acceptance into the program by Thursday March 18, 2010.
- Applicants will be informed of the status of their application no later than end of day on Friday March 19, 2010.
